King Chef PH Honest Review
October 21, 2020
We used to be regular customers of King Chef pre-COVID because of their late night dimsum promos. Of course, once COVID happened, all King Chef escapades ground to a halt. Well, the other day, I saw a 10.10 King Chef promotion and thought, “why not?”
Essentially, the promo mechanics was as follows – see photo below
I knew this wouldn’t be enough to feed the family though, so I ended up ordering Hot Shrimp Salad and Mapo Tofu in Hotpot as well. Overall verdict?
VERDICT: Meh. Nothing stood out

PRICE: PHP 1010 (originally PHP 1400)
Serves: 2-3 pax (by my estimate)
I was quite excited for this, because I haven’t had peking duck in FOREVER. When it arrived, I quickly realized why ordering peking duck 2 ways to-go wasn’t one of my brightest ideas…
To be fair, the Chinese Pancakes were still soft and chewy (my house is 10 mins away from the King Chef branch). However, the duck skin were already getting rather soggy which was a bit of a letdown.
Aside from that, I don’t think I ever realized how small half a duck is? LOL. Essentially, expect around 12 Chinese pancakes (with ~2-3 duck slices each). The salt and pepper duck was more bountiful, but it was a lot of bones, VERY salty, and VERY oily. I liked it because it was quite tasty, but also recognize that it isn’t exactly healthy.

Price: PHP 420
Serves: 2-3 pax (but you need other viands as well!)
I really love hot shrimp salad – the breaded shrimp mixed with the sweet mayo dressing and fruit cocktail is just LOVE. But, to be honest, I was very disappointed with the King Chef version. Not because it was terrible – it was quite alright, but it was so terribly small! Essentially 10 small pcs of shrimp that were liberally coated with sweet mayo, with minimal fruit cocktail as well. That’s it – this made me resolve to learn how to make this myself. Clearly, it can’t be that hard!

Price: PHP 330
Serves: ~2-3 pax
I really like Mapo Tofu as well, and believe this should be a staple dish done right by ALL Chinese restaurants. My personal fave is Causeway’s. Well, King Chef has really let me down. The Japanese beancurd was soft and silky (super important), BUT the ground pork quality was not good, and I found the spicy bean sauce overpowering because it had congealed as opposed to being smooth and liquid-y. Overall, definitely do not recommend this dish
