House of Birria’s Premium Beef Birria Honest Review

Never been to Mexico. Never heard of Beef Birria before. But one time, I was craving for beef tacos and ever since then, Facebook AND Instagram keeps popping up with House of Birria ads. I swear, it’s scary how smart ads targeting is nowadays AND how long our data is kept on their servers…

But anyway, back to the birria tacos. What is this exactly? To be fair, this isn’t a legit Mexican dish, but is instead a Mexican-inspired dish that originated from Los Angeles’ Latinx community.

Interestingly, birria actually refers to the meat stew, which is bathed in chiles, spices, and all other good stuff, which results in this very deep vibrant red hue (that quite frankly, looks incredibly unhealthy). The Birria taco then is simply tortillas that’s been dipped into the thin later of fat from meat stew (told ya! no healthy), then filled with meat and grilled in the griddle – which creates that very crispy exterior.

The tacos are then served with consommé, aka the broth from the stew, so that you can dip your birria taco into the consommé before taking a big bite out of it.

Ok, so let’s discuss House of Birria now. According to their page, what makes their birrias unique is the following:

  • They use real Mexican chilis and spices
  • Their beef is USDA beef that’s braised in the birria for 8 hours, which makes it incredibly tender
  • Each taco is assembled with flour tortilla, cheddar, mozzarella cheese, white onion, cilantro, lettuce, and slow-braised beef. And of course, on the side, it comes with lemon wedges, salsa, and consommé for dipping

They currently have three packages available:

  • Small: PHP 250 (4 pcs)
  • Medium: PHP 1,000 (8 pcs)
  • Large: PHP 1,920 (16 pcs)

You guys know my family. No way anything less than a Large would satisfy us!!

So ok, moving on to the verdict… Is it good?

YES. It really is!

To be fair, I’m not a huge fan of the consommé. Like, I don’t get what value it adds when you dip the taco in, although I guess there is that additional flavor from the stew. The beef is incredibly tender, but it’s rather stringy which is neither good or bad, just nothing to write home about.

What I LOVE though is the crispy and flavorful flour tortilla. That is where the magic happens! The tortilla itself is incredibly flavorful, and its crispy exterior is not charred at all. It’s papery thin, soft, chewy and yet crispy. How can this be?! I guess that’s the magic of the fat from the birria stew? Incredible.

On top of that, I also love the cheddar and mozzarella cheese. It’s oozing. So good. If they come out with an offering that’s just tortilla topped with cheese and tomatoes – I’d buy them.
