Steamed Suahe in Garlic Sotanghon DIY Recipe (w/ step-by-step instruction)

This is such a classic. Oldie but definitely a goodie. It’s delicious and yet still healthy, so was pretty excited to try this! The best part? It uses minimal ingredients and sauces, so I could share this with my grandparents! My grandfather was super sweet – he called me up after to tell me it was super yummy and good job <3 Awww. (Although my father’s complaint was that it was rather bland and I should’ve added more soy sauce LOL. To be fair, my grandfather’s not allowed to eat anything with a ton of sodium or sugar…. so I guess it really is more to match his palate). Anyway, just adjust the amount of soy sauce and salt you put in according to your taste.

DELECTABLE DISH FOR THE DAY: STEAMED SUAHE IN GARLIC SOTANGHON

DIFFICULTY: Easy

SERVING SIZE: Good for 5 people

PREP TIME: 1.5 hours

COOK TIME: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS FOR STEAMED SUAHE IN GARLIC SOTANGHON

  • 1 kg shrimp, dehorned, deveined and split almost into two
  • 6 vermicelli noodles
  • 2 1/4 cup of water
  • 40 cloves of garlic
  • 12 tbsp rice wine
  • 4 tbsp sesame oil
  • 7 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt

STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS TO MAKE STEAMED SUAHE IN GARLIC SOTANGHON

Prepare the shrimp

  • Wash each shrimp carefully. Use the kitchen scissors to de-horn and de-whisker the shrimp

  • Then, de-tail (?) the shrimp

  • Snip the legs off the shrimp

  • Then cut through the back of the shrimp, then use your finger to tug out the black goop

  • Afterwards, use a knife to cut deeper – essentially, almost as if you’re cutting clean through the shrimp so it can stand up when put on the plate.

Prepare the garlic sotanghon

  • Soak 6 pieces of vermicelli noodles for 20 minutes.

  • Mince 40 cloves of garlic (mygosh, this was painful!!! My fingers are still smarting, and I got mini-burns huhu). Next time, I will find a better way to peel the garlic and mince it!

  • Pour 12 tbsp of rice wine and 4 tbsp sesame oil into a pan. Then, add minced garlic. Stir fry them until it’s golden brown. Then, add 2 tbsp sugar, 3/4 tsp salt, and 7 tbsp soy sauce. Mix it well. Adjust according to your preferred taste.
  • Afterwards, lay the soaked vermicelli noodle onto a flat plate. Arrange the cleaned shrimp on the noodles, with the tail waving away!
  • Then, pour the mixture evenly over the shrimp.

  • Bring the water in the steamer to a boil, push the dish with shrimp in, then cover and steam for 5-8 minutes (or until the shrimp turns orange)

  • Bon Appetit!
