Maki Haus Maki Mi and Fresh Lumpia Honest Review
October 1, 2021
Maki Haus’ maki mi is an institution in my house. It’s arguably my dad’s favorite comfort meal, and we’ve had many arguments where I wanted to eat somewhere and he would sneakily divert us to Maki Haus (and pacify me by saying we could go xyz after – which btw, we never do!).
Anyway, ever since the pandemic happened though and I dealt with a COVID scare (negative thankfully), I’ve built a moderate fondness for maki mi. This was probably because they fed me maki mi while under quarantine, and I found it very comforting to taste (and the fact that I could still taste!) hahaha!
So I guess there will be less arguments on food preferences moving forward. But first, what exactly is maki mi?
Maki Mi is essentially pork noodle soup. The maki is made from lean pork that’s pounded like crazy to make it really really tender (this is my favorite, and also why it’s regularly fed to you when you’re sick). It’s then marinated in soy sauce, garlic, black pepper, rice wine and onions, then covered with egg white prior to being cooked in boiling beef stock. Doesn’t it sound just so flavorful? While cooking, beaten egg is then dropped and stirred in to form strands within the soup. Egg noodles (the mi) are then added. But you can definitely just get the maki (which is really the star of the show).
So, how does Maki Haus’ maki mi fare during this pandemic?
First of all, ordering is super easy. Here’s their menu as of October 2021.
Just Viber them at +639152021990, and send in your order. I ordered 5 Maki Mi and 3 Fresh Lumpia. Paid via Gcash, then picked up. Easy peasy! Just take note that their operating hours are a bit in flux. I was super shocked when I messaged them at 5pm and they told me to hurry up and pick up because they were closing at 5:30pm!
Ok on to the food itself. The maki is always amazing. Incredibly tender, incredibly flavorful. The soup itself, I am rather ambivalent about.
It’s thick, and a bit gelatinous in nature (not overtly so, but definitely not watery). I guess I do like it, but it gets a bit much after awhile. Nakakaumay din.
The egg noodles – pass. It’s alright, but I wouldn’t notice if it was gone.
With regards to the lumpia, really excellent lumpia skin, it’s not tough at all, but neither does it rip easily. Likewise, the filling is chock-full and very fresh. There isn’t a ton of sauce but this allows you to taste the fresh filling even more!
Unfortunately, they only sent me 2 lumpia! I complained on Viber and chalked it up to a loss. But they very nicely told me the next day that it was their mistake, they apologize and I can pick up the 1 lumpia that day. So yay, extra lumpia for dinner that day (supposedly. But my mom ate it as a snack…)
Overall, happy experience with Maki Haus. Will order again. I do wish they provided free delivery though! I was told they did before…
