Cafe Breton Galette Paysanne, Butter & Sugar with Lemon Honest Review
November 14, 2021
FREEDOM! OMG – so technically, I have been eating out the past few weeks but mostly in the Banawe area where the restaurants are practically empty, standalone, and so overall feels pretty safe (but rather lonely).
Today, I made it to Robinsons Magnolia to meet up with friends for brunch. Mygosh, it almost feels like pre-pandemic days, which made me feel a bit giddy. Having said that, there are obvious downsides to these loosening restrictions. One, I can’t believe at 10:20AM, the mezzanine parking was practically full. CRAZY. I miss the days when I had the pick of parking spaces (I still did, at Basement 2 hehe).
Second, it makes me worried that there will be a surge coming up, just in time for Christmas. Gosh, I hope not. I want to be able to go out and about during my holiday break. I will cling to the idea that everyone’s who’s celebrating will be out-of-town and therefore Metro Manila itself will still be deserted-ish.
Anyway! I’ve always liked Rob Mag because it’s relatively empty (hehe poor shops though, I don’t know how they survive). Plus, they have this really nice garden area where you can have outdoor dining. They also have Park & Dine as an option, although that didn’t seem open today.
Okay, all this context aside. Ever since I found out Cafe Breton had opened in Rob Mag (literally found out 2 weeks ago from my fellow tita friends), I’ve been itching to go!!! My absolute favorite there is Butter & Sugar with Lemon (actually, I can live without the lemon), but really, my friend’s maid can cook this and it is so good, and I wish she’d just teach me how to make it so I can make it at home. *Drool* Although, I guess if I figured out how much butter and sugar actually went into this dish, then I might not be as willing to eat it… LOL Ignorance is bliss.
Outdoor Seating and Service
First off, Cafe Breton has a really spacious outdoor seating area. It’s pretty hot though. Considering it’s November, when it’s already relatively cool, I was… really sweating. I wish they put up fans! I mean really, what’s an additional fan or two to increase your guests’ comfort huhu.
Also, service was so-so. I think there was only one server who was handling the entire restaurant, so it was pretty tough to catch her attention. In particular, this was not helped by the restaurant’s layout – which is kind of rectangular? So if the server is in one area, she really can’t see you. It made me wish there was a bell I could ring hahaha! (and that I had brought my own water bottle)
Food
Okay – because this was brunch, I technically had to order a savory meal first before I could dig into the ultimate goal of this trip. I wasn’t sure what to order because I really have never eaten a meal at Cafe Breton before. LOL.
In the end, I asked for the server’s advice and decided to get the Galette Paysanne (Hungarian sausage, onions, sunny side-up egg, asparagus with cheese sauce) based on her recommendation. Honestly, it looks weird.
The reality? It also tastes weird hahahaha! Okay, so first off – it uses buckwheat crepe, which has a distinct taste of its own. It’s not bad but it’s also not something I’ll look for? The elements of the galette were good on its own – asparagus good, hungarian sausage good, sunny side-up egg good – but really, who thought it was a good idea to put them all together? Oh well, now I know not to order this again hehe (Also because I really dislike onions, but I thought these would be caramelized onions – they’re not)
The Butter & Sugar w/ Lemon though? SOOOO GOOOOD. Divine! I should’ve just ordered 2 of these. Haha! BUT after close to 2 years in quarantine, I do feel like I’ve become more sensitive to sugar. I found it a tad sweet. Ohno… Am I finally becoming healthier? 🙁 Anyway, the butter is obviously unhealthy but that’s what makes it so good. Then the lemon nicely offsets the sugar, which gives it this nice complex-ish flavor.
Overall, happy I finally got to have my Butter & Sugar w/ Lemon fix. And really praying this low case count will continue. Please Lord!
