Kukki Bakery Hokkaido Milk Pan, Melon Pan, Castella Cake Honest Review

It’s Christmas season! My favorite time of the year as it essentially means we’re being bombarded by food all around. One dessert that hit our table this Christmas was a Kukki Bakery goodies! My friend is a HUGE fan and he’s been trying to convert me for ages. Given this quest to convert, I have ended up trying a whole plethora of their offerings. Here’s my honest review!

Kukki Bakery goodies are here!

Verdict: Hokkaido Milk Pan ftw!

What I have tried:

  • Castella Cake: Chizu Flavor
  • Melon Pan: Original Flavor
  • Hokkaido Milk Pan: Malt Flavor, Uji Matcha Flavor, Strawberry Flavor

Castella Cake

What it is: Light and fluffy sponge cake, similar to kasutera

Chizu Flavor: Filled with cheddar cheese and topped with toasted parmesan cheese

Price: PHP 275 for a 7×7 box

Verdict: The sponge cake is DELIGHTFUL. It is truly super light and fluffy. The cheddar cheese filling was a bit of a dud though. You’ll notice in the photo that the cheddar cheese is a literal line, so each slice would only have a thin cheesy line to enjoy

Melon Pan

What it is: Japanese Sweet Milk Bun, with a layer of crisp cookie dough

Original: Their bestseller! They have other flavors which would have additional filling inside

Price: PHP 120 / box (4 pcs total)

Verdict: It’s good, but nothing beats the original Japanese Sweet Milk Bun. It was a bit on the dry side. I bet this would’ve been a lot tastier with filling inside! For your reference (and mine), they have the following filling options:

  • Butter: Filled with salted butter (sounds deadly)
  • Milk: Filled with milk jam (sounds interesting!)
  • Uji Matcha: Filled with uji matcha milk jam (their uji matcha milk jam is super good!)

Hokkaido Milk Pan

What it is: Soft and fluffy Japanese milk bread aka Shokupan, filled with sweet milk jam of your choice

Flavors tried: Malt (chocolate / Milo), Uji Matcha (100% pure uji matcha powder), Strawberry (real strawberries)

Price: PHP 225 – PHP 275 (depending on the flavor chosen) for a box of 9 pcs

Just looking at these Hokkaido Milk Buns makes me giddy inside

Verdict: I LOVED IT. The milk bread lives up to its name. Incredibly soft and fluffy. I had placed it in the refrigerator as we didn’t consume it immediately upon receiving the food items. When I took it out of the refrigerator, I decided to toast it to warm it up. Definitely the right decision. It’s sooo good. The bread was toasty warm, but the milk jam inside was still cool (like ice cream of sorts!)

Uji Matcha filling

My favorite flavor was the Uji Matcha, but I thought all three flavors were pretty good. Malt was another family favorite. We were a bit divided on Strawberry though. I liked it but my sister didn’t. She found the strawberry bits a bit weird. Ah well, to each his/her own

My recommended Kukki Bakery goodies

#1 Definitely the Hokkaido Milk Pan!

Hard to go wrong with this one. If I had to choose just one flavor, I’d get the Uji Matcha. But really, why try one when you can try all 3? They have a Mix Box option, where you can choose 3 flavors (so 3 pcs per flavor).

#2 Castella Pan – Original Flavor

The Castella itself was super light and airy. I really liked it! No need to get the flavored ones – just the castella alone is pretty good

#3 Melon Pan – with Uji Matcha flavor (maybe)

This one is still up for debate, but I’d be willing to try this again, but with filling this time.
