Bicho Bicho by Panaderya Toyo Honest Review

My gosh! Panaderya Toyo‘s Bicho Bicho are SO GOOD. Normally, I start my blog with a quick blurb – a teaser so to speak. But the bicho bicho needs no introduction. Rest assured, it is DAMN GOOD.

My friend introduced this to me – and honestly, I would never have found out about it otherwise because they’re located in Makati which I consider to be waaay too far for my gastronomic adventures LOL. So, thank goodness for friends! Thank you thank you!

Toyo Eatery has consistently been recognized in the Top 50 Best Restaurants in Asia (the only one in the Philippines!) for its modern take on the Filipino cuisines but utilizing local ingredients and staying true to the Filipino culture and identify, so it’s no wonder that their bakery (Panaderya Toyo) is equally revolutionary.

Now don’t get me wrong, bicho-bicho (the Filipino counterpart of doughnuts) already existed long before Panaderya Toyo came along. Soft, fluffy, and coated in sugar – these Filipino twisted doughnuts are super yummy and served as delectable breakfast food, snacks, or dessert!

Panaderya Toyo made it more exciting though by coming up with flavors like Saba, Quezo de Bola, and Santol. My gosh, each piece is distinctly chewy, with a dense yet fluffy texture (I know, how is this possible?!?!). Supposedly, the texture comes about because their dough base is made with unbleached flour, milk, and eggs that’s mixed, shaped, then fermented overnight. I have zero ideas about baking, so I’ll take their word for it. All I know is – these desserts are on a different level altogether. So good!

My personal favorite is the Saba Bicho, which is stuffed with saging na saba and dusted with cinanamon sugar. I’m looking forward to trying more delicacies from this panaderya. If only they weren’t so far! Please open up north soon.
