Ahma’s Kitchen Honest Review

As part of our birthday tradition, I had to buy cha misua for my sister’s birthday. The question is… from who? In the past, my mom or grandma would cook this, but my mom decided a couple of years back that it was way too much effort LOL, so we’ve been trying different establishment’s cha misua ever since.

So one of the crowdsourced suggestion was Ahma’s Kitchen. I remember eating here pre-pandemic and feeling vastly underwhelmed by their oyster cake. But oyster cake is certainly not cha misua, so I figured I might as well try.

Overall – I will say, Ahma’s Kitchen’s food is okay – hit or miss depending on the dish (I will expound on this in a bit), but the serving size seriously leaves a lot to be desired. Customer service also, was rather slow. It’s not like I expect them to be super techie and respond to me immediately, but I had to keep following up over ~3 days to ask, how to pay, and to confirm my order.

Anyway, let’s discuss the food. So this is what I ordered:

  • Misua (medium) 670
  • Hot and sour soup 520
  • Sesame black chicken 480
  • Stir fried polonchay 300
  • Sweet and sour shrimp with taro 300

Misua

The Ahma’s Kitchen Misua certainly did not disappoint. I can see why my friend recommended this! The noodles are incredibly flavorful. I’m pretty sure it was cooked in stock. And they added tons of nuts and eggs (although very little shrimp). I purchased the Medium size, and I’d say this would probably feed around 4 people – as an appetizer of sorts. Overall, would I reorder this? Yes, definitely.

Although! My grandma said that this wasn’t appropriate to eat for birthdays, because it technically isn’t cha misua since it was cooked in stock. Hehe, ohwell. But she agreed that it was quite good.

Hot and Sour soup

This one was quite baffling!!! When it arrived, I thought they had sent us the wrong order. It certainly doesn’t look like hot and sour soup. But they assured us that this was it, so okaaay.

I can see why it can be considered hot and sour soup though. It was hot, and it was sour (kind of like sinigang – which I am not so fond of. But the soup was alright. What I didn’t like was the fish they used! To be fair, the fish itself was tender (meat-wise), but it had small bones (ridiculously small) which made for a not-so-great eating experience…

Would I reorder this? Definitely not.

For my grandma, I had ordered Fishball Patola soup. That one was okay, although she said she could’ve cooked that herself LOL

Sesame Black Chicken

Mygosh, the serving size, SO SMALL. I have no words. The chicken, so small also! My dad was baffled… The sauce itself was very yummy and the garlic was very good. But I would definitely not reorder this again.

Stir Fried Polonchay

It’s difficult to go wrong with polonchay. It’s literally one of the most basic Chinese dishes ever. So, taste-wise OK. Serving size-wise – ugh, definitely too small…

Sweet and Sour Shrimp with Taro

This was such a major disappointment. The shrimp was not fresh!!! I think that is always the most important component in any seafood dish. Again, the sauce was good, the taro was good. But not fresh shrimp equals automatic X.

So overall, I would reorder the cha misua, but everything else – hard pass
