MilkRun Desserts Tres Leches Honest Review

My cousin and his wife sent over these MilkRun Tres Leches the other day, and I’ve been drooling since then! Compared to the other brands on the market, MilkRun has really innovative flavors and I was eager to try them out and check how they stack up.

Verdict: Interesting flavors set them apart, but can be too sweet

What is Tres Leches Cake?

Tres Leches, simply translated, refers to a three milks cake. In essence, it’s sponge cake that’s been soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy milk. It has a distinct texture, and is surprisingly not soggy despite being soaked in a mixture of milk

What’s my honest review of the MilkRun Tres Leches?

First off, I tried three flavors: Ube, Cereal Milk, and Honey Calamansi & Coconut. While each of these flavors used different sponge cakes (ube sponge cake for Ube, calamansi sponge cake for Honey Calamansi & Coconut, and normal sponge cake for Cereal Milk), I will admit that they all ended up tasting the same to me, as the sweet nature and consistency of the milk it was soaked in really seeped into it. Likewise, after letting it sit for one night, the tres leches cake had seemed to shrink a bit, so perhaps best to consume immediately upon receipt

As such, my review will primarily consist of the toppings itself. Of the three, I liked Ube the most – simply because the distinct ube flavor was difficult to cover up, even with the milk soak. I loved the ube halaya underneath the toppings, which really added an extra oomph to every bite.

After this, I thought the Honey Calamansi & Coconut was an innovative take, although the flavor could come out stronger. Still, there was a tangy bite to it that was interesting.

Last but definitely not the least was the Cereal Milk. For me, this was the most basic form of the 3. Unfortunately, I had left the Tres Leches overnight, and by the time I ate it, the cereal had already become rather soggy. For that alone, I would suggest NOT ordering this if you live a trifle far away from Dasmarinas, Makati – which is where these would be originating from.

If I choose to order, I’d probably try their Eggnog next, as it seems VERY interesting. Hello rum and alcohol content mehehe.

Overall, happy to have tried and definitely an interesting addition to the Tres Leches scene of Metro Manila. Hoping they can come up with a less sweet version soon!
