China Mommy Curry Crab, Mushroom Fortune Bag, Lo Ba Honest Review

I swear I follow Jin Loves to Eat to torture myself. I have no idea how she can consume all those ridiculously yummy food every day, day in and day out. Still, sometimes I do wonder – how can ALL the food she buys and/or gets for free all be good?!? So when I watch, I always take her recommendations with a grain of salt.

But there are some stores she consistently advertises (personally!) which really makes me believe that wow, these must be REALLY good. One such store is China Mommy. So on Father’s Day, I decided I might as well treat my dad to a good meal for all that he has done for us, and took the plunge by ordering from China Mommy TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE. Mygosh, ordering for holidays is mega stressful because all the stores get fully booked super quickly…

Anyway, I ordered the following dishes, and that’s what I’ll be reviewing today.

  • Truffle Mushroom Fortune Bag
  • Crabs in Special Curry Sauce
  • Lo Ba (Taiwanese Minced Pork)
  • Taoso Lapu Lapu (not part of review – I sent this to my grandparents and never got to taste them LOL)
  • Vegetarian’s Bird’s Nest Soup

Of the four dishes I’ll be reviewing, my absolute favorite was the Truffle Mushroom Fortune Bag. Just the wafting smell of the truffle was enough to make my mouth water, but oomph. First bite in, and I was sold. Three kinds of mushrooms, vegetables, with a tofu skin wrap? Just pure magic. So so good – and it’s all vegetables so technically healthy. Woohoooo!

Only gripe, I wish the twine they used to tie the fortune bag is also edible. It’s so distracting to have to gently take it out mid-bite.

Next up is the Crabs in Special Curry Sauce. Supposedly, this is what put China Mommy on the map. I have no idea when that was because China Mommy has been around for awhile supposedly. But I was really trying to decide between this or Sotanghon Crab. The thing is, if I get Sotanghon Crab, then that’s it – that’s the meal (also sotanghon crab is just SUCH a classic), whereas if I go with the curry sauce, I’d have to pair it with rice.

Decisions decisions.

Went with the Special Curry Sauce in the end. No regrets. The crabs are SO juicy, fresh and flavorful. The curry sauce is Thai-style and just chockfull of flavor. It’s been awhile since I had Thai curry this strong and this good!!! Still, because I just had Singaporean Style Chili Crab the week before from Sergeants Crabs Kitchen, I must admit that’s still the hands-down winner (for one, the crab last week was just HUMONGOUS). And really, Singaporean Style Chili Sauce is just heaven. Still, this crab from China Mommy was no slouch.

Next up, we’ve got the Lo Ba – which is Taiwanese Minced Pork. Ironically, this was what actually enticed me because I LOVE Lo Ba but it’s so rare to find good ones in Manila. But Jin Loves to Eat kept proclaiming it was the best ever, yada yada. Hmmm. I don’t know. Maybe because I reheated it? But the fat that I love just wasn’t there. Mmmm will probably pass on this one. I’ll let you guys know if I find a good lo ba place in Manila as an alternative.

Last but definitely not the least is the Vegetarian’s Bird’s Nest Soup! Served chilled – tastes good! Not too sweet, but I like the texture.

And that’s it!!! China Mommy is a tad pricey but worth it!!! I definitely recommend (for special occasions).
