Indulge Patisserie Ube Cake and Mocha Cake Honest Review
November 14, 2020
My official role in the family is to procure the latest food craze for our consumption. Well, this time around, I was a bit late at the uptake because Indulge Patisserie has been around for years and lots of friends have been recommending that I check them out.
Well, I finally bit the bullet. For my sister’s birthday, I ordered both the ube cake AND the mocha cake (my friend said he liked the mocha more than the ube). Given I was already shelling out money for shipping via car (they don’t recommend motorcycle shipping as the cake condition might be damaged), I might as well get the most bang for buck out of my shipping (Shipping by car costs PHP 500+, I cried)! LOL #Excuses
Verdict: Indulge Patisserie Cakes are good, but not WOW.
What I Ordered
- Ube Cake (9 inches round): PHP 1000
- Mocha Cake (9 inches round), with Simple Roses: PHP 1300
Ease of Ordering
Ordering is relatively simple – just head over to their website: https://indulgepatisserie.ph/
The choices are pretty self-explanatory, BUT I found the photos and pricing a bit misleading at first (or I’m just stupid). I spent SO long trying to figure out how to request for the flower icing on top. Well, stupid little me, apparently, when you click the actual item – there’s a drop-down where you can choose the icing design on top (from plain to full floral).
After you order, you can then choose to pay through either BDO, BPI, Paymaya or GCash. I wish they had a credit card option because mobile banking in the Philippines sucks! But such is life. Once you’ve paid, simply send proof of deposit to their email address for confirmation. The steps are laid out and easy to follow.
Finally, on the agreed upon date, pick up your order from Valle Verde 5, Pasig (Diba, ang layo?!)
Ube Cake
Indulge Patisserie’s Ube Cake is composed of soft ube chiffon layers with light ube icing. If you choose to have flower icing, expect hand-piped buttercream flowers in shades of pink and blue (other colors upon request).
As I had the Ube Cake picked up the day before, I placed it in the freezer first then transferred to the refrigerator a few hours before our planned consumption. Once it came out in its full ube glory – it was… underwhelming. Haha!
Okay, first off: the Ube Cake design is extremely plain. I suggest you top up with buttercream flower icing so it looks better in your photos (I know – such a shallow reason, but so true!)
Second, taste-wise, it was alright. The ube chiffon was indeed soft and pillowy in texture, with a distinct ube flavor. However, I much preferred the mocha chiffon – which could simply be personal preference (although my whole family agreed), but I think it was because the mocha chiffon was airy while the ube chiffon was rather crumbly. Second, the ube icing was smooth in texture but largely forgettable. Overall, I much prefer Conti’s ube cake version – which has real purple yam and layers of creamy custard!
Tips for consumption
Note: we ate the Ube Cake in two servings. The first time, it had been in the freezer for awhile before its transfer to the refrigerator. Despite being in the refrigerator for ~3+ hours, I found the cake rather stiff, and the icing still halfway frozen (with ice!).
The second time around, we had placed it in the refrigerator overnight at that point. The cake tasted waay more delicious then – the chiffon and icing went down smoother, and had no random icy chunks. So, the point of this story is – place the ube cake in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer.
Mocha Cake
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Indulge Patisserie’s Mocha Cake. As this is a well-loved cake flavor in the Philippines, I normally associate it with Goldilocks’ Birthday Cake and (my favorite) Hizon’s! <3 While it’s a pretty common flavor, I must admit, I really really like it. So I was hoping this would be good as well.
Color me surprised, it was! I found the mocha chiffon light as air, and not sweet at all. The coffee buttercream filling was a revelation – certainly something that sets it apart from Goldilocks and Hizon’s. Likewise, I splurged with this cake and paid a bit more for buttercream flowers on top – not only did this make it prettier, but flowers made of pure buttercream? Delicious! And also incredibly unhealthy, so perhaps it was a good thing I didn’t add buttercream flowers to both the Mocha Cake and the Ube Cake
Overall, I think Indulge Patisserie cakes are tasty and a nice treat any day! Having said that, given the distance from my house (mygahd, PHP 500+ shipping fee – I could’ve purchased a Golidlocks birthday cake with that!), I don’t think it’s special enough to warrant a repeat order, unless they become available closer to home.
