Leampanada Honest Review

A friend I serendipitously met up with recently, as we were attending the wedding of a common friend, told me that she had started her own empanada business. Curious, I asked for more details. Why empanadas?

Funnily enough – she started making empanadas because she found herself eating waaay too much sugar during the lockdown (raise your hand if you found yourself doing the same). She still wanted to bake dough, so what’s a good alternative that doesn’t have sugar? You guessed it – empanadas!

The really interesting thing here is she actually makes empanada de kaliskis (which means it’s made from flaky dough) which is the old-school style of making empanadas. And get this – really interesting flavors. There’s the original – which is ground pork (or beef), with corn and all those other good stuff. Then there’s the lasagna flavor, which is tomato cream chicken filling with garlic dough!

Well, my interest was piqued so I ordered a Box of 8. In retrospect, I really should have ordered more.. What was I thinking!?!

The order arrived. I popped it into the toaster to heat it up.

Finally, the moment of truth… It’s super yummy!!! I love the flaky dough. I don’t know enough about dough to wax rhapsodic about it, but what I like about this one is it doesn’t flake (LOL which is ironic coz it’s called flaky dough). I found that the structure general stayed without the empanada falling apart once you bite into it.

Of the flavors, I actually preferred the original. It’s hard to beat a classic, but I must admit the lasagna flavor is definitely interesting.

I’m excited to see what else comes out of Leampanadas! You can be sure I’ll line up to order omnomnom.
