Colonel Curry Premium Japanese Curry Bento and Signature Family Set Combo Honest Review

I’m always on the lookout for random promos, and once I set my mind to trying it out because of a promo, I really do! So, I saw that Colonel Curry had a free delivery promo, and my sister’s been craving for Japanese curry for the longest time! Therefore, I was like – ok, this is it!

So, this is what I ordered:

  • Signature Family Set Combo
    • 2 Japanese Curry (110g), 2 Laksa Curry (110g), 10pcs Pan-Seared Gyoza (I upgraded to 10 pcs for PHP 150 – it was originally 5 pcs only)
  • Premium Japanese Curry Bento (180g pork cutlets, rice, cabbage, and radish)

So, was it any good?

First off – the rice to pork cutlets ratio was surprisingly even. I say surprisingly because normally, they put A LOT of rice so that you’ll be full. But here, they were relatively stingy on the rice. It was just right for me, but I think I could’ve eaten more still if they had added more rice, since there was a ton of curry sauce leftover

In terms of the pork cutlet itself, I thought it was deep-fried quite well. The deep-fried skin retained its crunch quite well, which is super important. Having said that, the meat itself was relatively tender but not so flavorful. Obviously, for the price, I guess it is what it is.

As for the actual curry – the Japanese Curry in the Family Set is literally JUST the sauce, no potatoes and carrots. Such a letdown. The Japanese Curry sauce itself was ok. It tastes like curry, but there was no X-factor that made it memorable. As for the Laksa Curry – to be fair, it does taste like laksa! But I realized, it’s a bit weird for me to have katsu that’s laksa flavored, as I typically associate laksa with soup.

Having said that, I did appreciate how the curry sauce was separated from the cutlets so we could pour it as we were about to eat.

Finally, the gyoza. The gyoza meat was good but waay too little. Also, the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. By the time it got to us, the gyoza dumplings were already all clumped together so it was pretty impossible to separate. The skin was also not gyoza-like, tasted more like dumpling skin. What I really liked though was the chili sauce! We didn’t use it all up, so I’m planning to make aglio olio with it next week!

Overall – not bad per se, but likely not something I would order again.
