Best nature trails and areas in Sydney – my top picks!

In Sydney, exercise (including walking) is definitely in – which would explain why everyone manages to remain supremely fit, despite being surrounded by so much yummy food!

In honor of this, here I am, listing out six of my favorite tracks and gardens (which pretty much means, anyone can do these walks as I managed them)!

My favorite nature trails and areas…

Coogee to Bondi walk

  • Distance: 6km (3.5 miles)
  • Duration: ~2-3 hours
  • How to get here: Regular bus trips to Bondi Junction or Coogee
  • Highlights: Towering sandstone cliffs with humongous crashing waves, including Aussie surfers catching a wave before and after work

Personal tip: Start from Coogee and walk towards Bondi, as it’ll make the Bondi reveal more gratifying (Bondi being the bigger beach between the two). Plus, Bondi Junction has a lot more restaurants and cafés to choose from, making it the perfect place to end your walk

Spit to Manly coastal walk

  • Distance: 12km (7.5 miles)
  • Duration: ~5-7 hours
  • How to get there: Direct bus to Spit
  • Highlights: Spectacular harbor, bush, and ocean views! Seeing the unique flora and fauna of Australia is a reward in and of itself

Personal tip: End your trip at Manly, and take the ferry just in time for the sunset (note: during the weekend, the ferry queue can be quite considerable)! That way, you’ll catch the setting sun as it sinks behind the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge

Royal National Park

Stats below are specific to the Couranga walking track:

  • Distance: 5.1km (3.0 miles)
  • Duration: ~2-3 hours
  • How to get there: Train to Loftus, Engadine, Heathcote, Waterfall or Otford
  • Highlights: Enjoy the serenity as you soak in the wonders of the rainforest and hop across the running river

Personal tip: Check out the Wedding Cake Rock while here, an extremely well-known rock formation that makes for beautiful photos

Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk (at Palm Beach)

  • Distance: 2.2km (1.4 miles)
  • Duration: ~1.5–2 hours
  • How to get there: Bus to Palm Beach
  • Highlights: Spectacular views of two different types of ocean (one side with HUGE waves, while the other is completely serene) ++ whale watching from the months of May to November

Personal tip: Take the Access Trail going up (twice as long as the Smuggler’s Trail, but definitely less difficult – you’ll thank me after. You can choose to take the Smuggler’s Trail going down. Likewise, don’t miss the Palm Beach market (held every 4th Sunday) and the Barrenjoey Lighthouse tour while there!

Royal Botanical Garden (specifically the Calyx exhibit)

I’m not a huge fan of gardens normally as all flowers look the same to me after awhile… but this time, I went specifically for the Calyx exhibit – which at that time was the Flower wall, showcasing 18,090 plants! Crazy isn’t it? The exhibit changes regularly though – so make sure to check that out!

From there, don’t forget to head on over to Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair which provides perhaps the best vantage point for the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the Sydney cityscape

Cherry blossom festival, in the month of August

Surprise! Sydney has cherry blossoms too (but in the month of August, and only for roughly two weeks)!!! Auburn Botanic Garden is one of the most famous places for cherry blossom viewing in Sydney, and is quite near to the Sydney city center. Just grab a train to Auburn station, then avail of the free shuttle from there to the garden. Note: if it’s not cherry blossom season, don’t bother going!

Others

Technically not in Sydney, but if you’ve got the time, why don’t you head outside the city, rent a car, and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime roadtrip! The Aussie countryside is truly stunning!
