San Francisco tour (5-day itinerary) – Hipster areas in San Francisco (Mission District, Painted Ladies, 16th Avenue Tiled Steps)
August 29, 2018
Are you in search of off-the-beaten path places to check out in San Francisco? You’re in luck – because this blog post is all about the hipster, never before seen places you can discover during your trip in San Francisco! Charge your cameras, let’s go!
Day 3
- Breakfast at Tartine Bakery
- Murals at Clarion Alley and Balmy Street Alley
- Grocery shopping at Bi-Rite Market
- Lunch at Kitchen Story
- Castro Theater
- Painted Ladies
- 16th Avenue Tiled Steps
- Dinner at Chipotle
Breakfast at Tartine Bakery
The freshness and flavor of the baked goods here is just… indescribable. Would 100% recommend if you’ve got the time and the inclination to drop by the hipster part of San Francisco!
Note: We got here at 9:00AM, there was a decent queue but it moved pretty quickly (~15mins wait)
- What we ordered (in order of preference): Brioche bread pudding (trying to convince my sister to make this at home), pain au jamon (the burnished croissant accent was surprisingly good!), cinnamon bun (candied orange tinge = sheer genius), lemon cream tart, banana cream tart (good, but very reminiscent of bannaple pie)
- Cost: < $10 per person
Murals at Clarion Alley and Balmy Street Alley
So… these aren’t exactly near Tartine Bakery. It actually takes ~20-30 mins walk to reach these street alley, but I figured the weather was nice, and we had lots of time! I really liked it though – the wall murals helped show the lives of the oppressed and their hopes for the future
Along the way, you’ll also see the women’s building – which shows a building-sized Indian mural. Cool right? Having said that, if you don’t have the time, you can definitely skip these
Grocery shopping at Bi-Rite market
Just for the heck of it, we decided to drop by the Bi-Rite market which sells all organic food products. There were loads of really cool brands – from wine, to cheese, meats, and fruits selections!
Lunch at Kitchen Story
Candied bacon? Check. Unlimited mimosas? Check. Perfect place to chill and enjoy? Check check check! If I’m speechless and not being terribly helpful with my descriptions… it’s because I’m too busy reminiscing fondly and drooling over pictures of the food I’m posting below
- What we ordered: Mom’s benedict, Crab benedict, Millionaire’s benedict, Belly Rancheros, Deep fried mascarpone filled French toast, Pop sandwich
- Cost: ~$30 per person
Castro Theater
From Kitchen Story, the Castro Theater should be a ~10-15 mins walk. There’s not much to see actually – but you’re in the area, so why not!
Painted Ladies
Don’t kill me! I know, Painted Ladies isn’t near per se… but after all that eating, don’t you feel like you need to compensate with a little bit of walking? If you’re a fan of “Full House,” then drop by and check this row of houses out. It’s right across Alamo Square so you can chill at the park if you’re tired
16th Avenue Tiled Steps
Okay, even I’m not crazy enough to suggest we walk this. To get to 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, we got a Lyft since they were offering a 20% discount at that time (haha the power of Googling for discounts yay!!!). Once in the car, tell your driver you want to be dropped off at the TOP of the Tiled Steps. From here, you should then walk up the pathway (170+ steps of pain!) to the top of the hill (no idea what this viewpoint is called). The goal is to get to the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps before sunset – then you’ll see this stunning 360 degree view!
Afterwards, take your time snapping photos of the beautiful tiled steps. Just remember, once the sun fully sets, you lose all natural light… So maybe don’t take your time haha! Take my word for it – seeing these lit up under the rays of the dying sun was just absolute perfection
Dinner at Chipotle
All that walking made me hungry and craving for Mexican food (super random right?). Anyway, there was a Chipotle near our hotel, so we dropped by for dinner. The food here is so amazingly filling and so incredibly cheap (by San Francisco standards!) If you’re not a heavy eater, I’d suggest you split a burrito with someone. [Note: even I found it difficult to finish, and friends of mine know how much I’m capable of eating!]
- What we ordered: Steak burrito (bursting with beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and guacamole)
- Cost: < $10 per person
And that concludes Day 3!
