[The World in a Nutshell] WanderTales: Stories of adventures and misadventures

Everything you need to know about Karachi, including what to see and eat (as a solo DIY tourist)

I’ll be honest – I wasn’t sure initially if I wanted to go to Karachi. I’ve read news report claiming Karachi as the world’s most dangerous city (that’s not located officially in a war zone), and if that didn’t deter me, it’s also been consistently voted least desirable place to live year after year…

But, seeing as I was already in Pakistan (which gasp! Still horrifies and stuns friends and family alike when I tell them), I figured to see is to believe – and to simply accept what’s been reported in the media, without trying to discover the good sides of the city seems foolish indeed

Mazar e Quaid 2
The Pakistan flag, waving proud and free, in front of Jinnah’s Mausoleum – fitting, don’t you think?

I’ll be honest – now that I’ve been to Pakistan’s three main cities (Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi), I would choose Lahore and Islamabad over Karachi any day. Compared to the two, Karachi seems dirtier, grittier, less safe, but… also, more real – it’s funny because as I’m writing this blog, I realize which cities it reminds me of, New York and Manila – this is as cosmopolitan as Pakistan gets, I guess

Karachi urban planning
Modern Karachi – as viewed from above

Truly, Karachi is a city of extremes

On the one hand, it IS unsafe – as my Pakistani friends keep reminding me…

  • Stay away from the “no-go” areas known to be fighting turfs for guns and gangs
  • Don’t walk around (especially at night!). Best to remain in the lit areas, and use ONLY Uber or Careem
  • Keep a close eye on your bags – pickpockets and thieves abound

The city overall is an urban planning nightmare – constantly suffering from a lack of water and frequent power outages, not to mention the horrendous gridlocked traffic I’ve only ever seen in Manila and Jakarta

Yet despite this, Karachi is also savvy and sophisticated – clearly the more glamorous sister compared to Lahore and Islamabad. Shiny shopping malls selling stylish and high quality items akin to those you’d find in Champs Elysees of Paris can be found here. Not to mention, top-notch restaurants that convinced me this was the city I wanted to spend my birthday weekend in as I welcomed my 23rd year on this planet. Haha, small wonder… food trumps safety and other concerns after all (at least for me!)

Okra
Absolutely divine filet steak from Okra

In this city of extremes, I found a city worth exploring – with its own unique appeal. Enough of my prattlings! On to the actual meat of this blog

Table of contents

Sightseeing in Karachi

Alas, public transport in Karachi is non-existent (or at least, not as safe or as easy to navigate as I’d like it to be). My suggestion to get around Karachi would be to either (1) hire your own car and driver – I personally prefer Avis, just because it’s an internationally recognized brand, or (2) use Uber or Careem to get around – Careem’s maps infrastructure is much better than Uber’s so would suggest you take Careem (download the app before you head to Pakistan!)

There are some areas where it’s a bit difficult to get an Uber or Careem,  so all-in-all, I’d suggest to rent a car for a day or two. Otherwise, if you’re the type to lounge at a place for >1 hour or so, then feel free to Uber / Careem instead!

DAY 1 (in the order presented)

Masjid-e-Tooba

I swear, the architecture found in Karachi continually surprises me. Masjid-e-Tooba is said to be the largest single dome mosque (with not a single column inside to support it!) and is built with pure white marble – guaranteed to temporarily blind you as you first gaze upon it

Masjid e Tooba

Mazar-e-Quaid (also known as Jinnah’s Mausoleum)

The final resting place of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan – this mausoleum is perhaps one of the most visited tourist destinations in Karachi. Aside from Jinnah, the remains of Fatima Jinnah (his sister, also known as the “Mother of the Nation”) and Liaquat Ali Khan (the first Prime Minister of Pakistan) can also be found here

Mazar e Quaid

National Museum of Pakistan

If you’ve been following my blog, then you’ll know I absolutely love history. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m listing the National Museum as another place to check out – it’s practically a treasure trove for history buffs like me! What I really appreciated here is the ability to see through the eyes of Pakistanis in my walk down memory lane – I left the building with a renewed appreciation of the struggles this country has gone through, the resilience of the Pakistani people – both of which have shaped the cultural history of the country

National Museum

Likewise, you’ll be astounded by the treasures you’ll find inside the building. Below you’ll see Holy Qur’ans that have existed for hundreds of years

National Museum 2

Frere Hall

One of the most iconic buildings in Karachi, built in honor of Sir Henry Frere – well known for making the Sindhi language compulsory in the province, as opposed to Persian, Frere Hall is normally frequented as a place for events and wedding photos. No wonder, as the building itself is magnificent – and reminds me of Hogwarts! Absolutely stunning! To my surprise, Frere Hall is also a library – home to over 70,000 books (including rare manuscripts only found here!)

Frere Hall

Mohatta Palace

When you first see the palace, I guarantee it’ll take your breath away. As I was super keen to understand what made the palace so aesthetically pleasing, I did some research. Apparently, this palace was built using pink Jodhpur stone in combination with local yellow stone from Gizri – wonder if I can recreate the same for my future home?

Anyway, aside from being absolutely beautiful – Mohatta Palace is also a museum that showcases Pakistani art – and no, we’re not just talking of paintings and the like. What you’ll see here includes traditional costumes and textiles (super pretty – it encouraged me to buy my very own shalwar kameez too!), ceramics, as well as rare maps and prints

Mohatta Palace

Clifton Beach

Whenever I asked locals what I should check out in Karachi, Clifton Beach would always be a prominent part of whatever list folks would share with me. It was a bit of a scratch my head moment as it isn’t a “real” beach – at least not one that I’m accustomed to in the Philippines as you can’t necessarily swim on the beaches (an oil spill occurred in 2003, and to this day, locals caution you against swimming there). I must admit though – the silvery sand’s perfect!

Sea

Once I visited though, I got the appeal. Clifton Beach abounds with excellent recreational and leisure activities (many of them quite unexpected!) For example, on the beach itself – you can enjoy camel rides, horse rides, and tri-rides (it was my first time to see and ride a camel live!); plus a fun picnic with family and friends. Near the beach, there’s an amusement park, a Cineplex Cinema, and the Dolmen Mall (where you can access fancy international brands)

Clifton Beach 2

Clifton Beach

After sampling the wonders of Clifton Beach, it’s time to head to Kolachi for a spectacular sea-side dinner, sampling traditional Pakistani dishes while enjoying a beautiful sunset by the sea

DAY 2

Old Town Karachi

I was extremely blessed as I had a friend who offered to tour me around the Karachi Old Town. As per his advice, we headed there early Sunday morning while most folks were still asleep – thereby neatly escaping the horrid Karachi traffic

Some of the magnificent buildings I saw during the tour included the following: Jehangir Kohati Parade, Customs House, Mereweather Tower, Memon Masjid, Railway Station, HBL, Pakistan Stock Exchange, DJ Singh Govt Science College

Old Town

Saddar Area

In the afternoon, we rushed to Saddar Area for some much-needed shopping spree. Did you know Karachi produces some of the best leather in the world – which they subsequently export? Knowing this, I headed to Saddar Area with high hopes of buying great value for money leather goods. Again, would highly recommend you come here with locals as (1) they know which stores you should frequent, and (2) they can bargain for you – otherwise, you’ll be provided foreigner prices…

Below you’ll find a leather jacket (which only costs PKR 4,300 – super cheap and of amazingly sturdy quality) and leather belts (which costs PKR 700 each – essentially overruns from the factories, although you can barely see the defects e.g. some slight discoloration)

Sheep leather jacket and cow leather belts

While here, make sure to eat bunkabab from the Zanib Market, as well as chillo kabab and nihari (note, this is spicy!) Having said that, I’d advise you eat these ONLY if you’re with a local, so you can ensure you’re eating fresh food at good prices

Chaukhandi Tombs

One sight I was not able to check out while in Karachi was the Chaukhandi Tombs. Technically not in Karachi, but close enough… I was really itching to see these tombs as they’re extremely well-known for their elaborate sandstone carvings (also supposed to be one of the most haunted sites in the region), and was submitted by Pakistan to be recognized as a UNESCO Heritage Site (currently still part of the tentative list)

Alas, I ran out of time. Will definitely be back in the future to check this out! If you’re curious to see what it looks like, do check out the link above

Eating in Karachi

Kolachi (Desi)

Location: Do Darya, Beach Avenue, Phase VIII, DHA Karachi

Considered to be one of the best open air seaside restaurants found in Karachi, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant! I’ve been here twice and both times were excellent – seriously. The desi food is super yum (local friends ordered, I would honestly have no idea what to order…), the view was spectacular, and the ambiance was incredibly pleasing (cool temperature helped – am not sure I’d enjoy the experience as much if I came during the summer)

Tips:

  • Make a reservation beforehand, else you’ll be forced to queue for a looong time
  • Bring cash, their credit card machines often don’t work
  • Come here right before sunset, and request for a seaside table – that way you’ll be able to enjoy your meal whilst watching a spectacular display as the sun sets beyond the sea horizon
  • When ordering, choose from the Desi menu (that’s what they cook best)

Food of the day: Peshawari Chicken Karahi and Seekh Kabab

Kolachi

Okra (Mediterranean)

Location: 12- C, 10th Zamzama Street، Karachi, Pakistan

Wow, what a doozy! With its beautiful ambiance, impeccable service, and mouth-watering menu, not to mention the seating capacity of 40; it’s a small wonder I managed to snag a table for myself at Okra… thank God Pakistanis don’t start their lunches early. Super highly recommend – perhaps my BEST meal in Pakistan to date

Food of the day: Filet steak with morel sauce, smoked salmon pouches with pimento cream, their luscious self-baked breads

Okra

Fuchsia (Thai)

Location: 1st Floor, Plot # 23-E, 2nd Zamzama Commercial Lane (E-Street) Phase V، DHA، Karachi, Pakistan

Its reputation as the best Thai in Karachi was well-deserved. Came to Fuchsia for my birthday dinner and had absolutely zero regrets – perfect meal to cap off the day, and it served as a nice reminder of home (Southeast Asia…) The green curry especially, was to die for!

Food of the day: Green curry, Red snapper fish, Chicken with Nanjing sauce

Fuchsia

Chop Chop Wok (Mongolian)

Location: Shop no. 2 & 3, 7-C, Stadium Phase 5, 2nd Commercial Lane, Karachi 75500, Pakistan

A bit far from the city center, I nonetheless thought Chop Chop Wok was well worth the distance (and the queue!) Can you imagine… I came here at 10PM, and was still forced to wait for 30 minutes??? As with most Mongolian noodle restaurants, you’re supposed to choose the type of base (noodles or rice), sauce, and meat to be found in your dish. I went with the Egg noodles, Japanese sauce, Combination meat (chicken + prawn) with fried egg option – and it was simply divine!

Food of the day: 3 step wok, Crispy calamari (with chili soy), Fresh mint lemonade

Chop Chop Wok

N’Ecos Natural Store and Café (Organic)

Location: 8C, Lane No. 1, Bukhari Commercial Area, Phase 6, DHA، Karachi, Pakistan

The rustic décor of N’Ecos will immediately make you feel right at home – that plus the AMAZINGLY sweet (and organic) dishes made this the perfect spot for me to chill out and while the afternoon away

Desserts for the day: French toast, chocolate éclair, breakfast-on-the-go smoothie (banana, muesli, honey, and yogurt)

N'Ecos

Well-recommended, but left me wanting (and not in a good way)

Xander’s (American)

Location: c 32، E St, Clifton Block 4، Karachi, Pakistan

Touted to be the best cafe in Karachi, and well recommend by both expat and local friends, I entered Xander’s with extremely high anticipation… and left with my hopes dashed. The glazed beef brisket was good, a bit cloying after awhile. But it was the trio of mini burgers that was the most disappointing  😔 What did I just eat?!? Mayhap I ordered the wrong thing, but looks like I won’t be returning anytime soon

Xanders

Pie in the Sky (cake)

Location: They have several branches – do check out the link above to ascertain which branch location would be nearest to you!

Pie in the Sky came extremely well-recommended. I ALWAYS have cake on my birthday and I didn’t want to stop that tradition just because I was in Pakistan. Alas, I find the cake offerings found here just do not compare with the ones found in Southeast Asia AND East Asia. Nevertheless, the cakes were decent and if you’re craving some – do try them out!

Pie in the Sky

And that, my friends, complete my Karachi rundown. Hope this blog post inspires you to visit this city of contradictions – and may you enjoy the encounter as much as I did!!

  • At the end of the day, either investment strategy
works, it really is dependent upon simply how much work

  • Hey, how’s it going?

I want to pass along some very important news that everyone needs to hear!

In December of 2017, Donald Trump made history by recognizing Jerusalem as the captial of Israel. Why is this big news? Because by this the Jewish people of Israel are now able to press forward in bringing about the Third Temple prophesied in the Bible.

Jewish Rabbis have publicly announced that their Messiah will be revealed in the coming years who will be a leader and spiritual guide to all nations, gathering all religions under the worship of one God. They deny Jesus as their Messiah, and the Bible tells us this Jewish Messiah will be the counterfiet that will bring about a false peace, and ultimatley the great tribulation.

They even printed a coin to raise money for the Temple with Donald Trumps face on the front and with king Cyrus'(who built the second Temple) behind him. On the back of the coin is an image of the third Temple.

More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically in Revelation 13:16-18:

“He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”

Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!

“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).

People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we needed two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

Visit http://WWW.BIBLEFREEDOM.COM to see proof for these things and much more!

If you haven’t already, it is time to seek God with all your heart. Jesus loves you more than you could imagine. He wants to have a relationship with you and redeem you from your sins. Turn to Him and repent while there is still hope! God bless!

The Jewish people deny Jesus as their Messiah and have stated that their Messiah has been identified and is waiting to be revealed. They say this man will rule the world under a one world religion called “spiritualism”.

They even printed a coin to raise money for the Temple with Donald Trumps face on the front and with king Cyrus'(who built the second Temple) behind him. On the back of the coin is an image of the third Temple.

The Bible says this false Messiah who seats himself in the Third Temple will be thee antichrist that will bring about the Great Tribulation, though the Jewish people believe he will bring about world peace. It will be a false peace for a period of time. You can watch interviews of Jewish Rabbi’s in Israel speaking of these things. They have their plans set in place. It is only years away!

More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically Revelation 13:16-18:

He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!

Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” (Revelation 14:9-11).

People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we need two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

  • Some tips i have seen in terms of laptop or computer memory is that often there are features such as SDRAM, DDR etc, that must fit in with the specific features of the mother board. If the computer’s motherboard is fairly current while there are no computer OS issues, improving the ram literally takes under 1 hour. It’s one of several easiest laptop upgrade processes one can visualize. Thanks for giving your ideas.

Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead.
